The Gold Guide
Everything you need to buy gold with confidence: what karats mean, how weight shapes price, how to care for your pieces and where to begin.
01
Karats, explained
A karat measures how much of a piece is pure gold, out of 24 parts.
| Karat | Purity | Best for | Character |
|---|---|---|---|
| 18k | 75% gold | Everyday jewellery: rings, fine chains and earrings | Durable and versatile |
| 21k | 87.5% gold | Pendants, bangles and celebration pieces | Warmer, deeper colour |
| 22k | 91.6% gold | Statement sets, heritage pieces and coins | Rich colour, softer metal |
| 24k | 99.9% gold | Investment pieces | Highest purity, softest |
| 999.9 | 99.99% gold | Gold bars and coins | Fine investment gold |
02
Weight and price
Gold is valued by weight and purity. Two pieces can look similar, yet the heavier one contains more gold and costs more. That is why we show karat on every piece and an estimated weight wherever one has been entered. Every price on our site is the piece's weight multiplied by our gold rate per gram for its karat. Where a weight is an estimate, your final quotation reflects the confirmed weight of the finished piece and the applicable gold rate.
As a guide, a fine everyday chain or pair of studs might weigh 1 to 4 grams, a woman's party piece around 12 grams, and a man's chain 10 grams or more. Use the weight filter on any page to compare.

Gold with Enduring Material Value
Gold has been valued across generations for its rarity, beauty and enduring place in personal collections. Whether chosen as jewellery or acquired in the form of bars and coins, it offers a tangible way to own a precious metal.
Its market value, however, can fluctuate. Jewellery resale prices may also be affected by purity, weight, condition, craftsmanship and the price a buyer is willing to pay.
At Vivid Karats, we believe in helping you make informed choices, whether you are building a jewellery collection, marking a milestone or acquiring gold for the future.

Questions, answered
Which karat should I buy first?
For everyday jewellery, 18k is the most popular first choice because it is durable. For investment, choose 999.9 fine gold bars or coins.
Why does weight matter so much?
Gold is valued by its weight and purity. A heavier piece contains more gold, so it costs more and holds more value.
How do I keep gold looking beautiful?
Store pieces separately, remove them before swimming or applying perfume, and polish gently with a soft dry cloth.
